<br />
Welcome to my gift guide for 2018! I will be sharing some great books and art supplies gift ideas in the next weeks, followed by my picks for this year's favorite products.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today we are kicking things off with probably my most favorite present to give and receive. Books, of course!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're not in the mood to read, just check out my video for all the information and my picks, OR go to my <a href="https://amzn.to/2zh4evN" target="_blank">Amazon store</a> and get a quick glimpse of all my picks-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TUJNKLe1umw/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TUJNKLe1umw?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's get started!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to start with one of my favorite watercolor artists- Jean Haines. Jean has several books, her style is loose, fluid and atmospheric. She uses color and texture in such inventive and inspirational ways. I have learned a lot from her and continue to be inspired every time I open one of her books. The 4 that I have are all similar in their content (all excellent!), I am listing them here in my order of preference, but they are all great picks.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. Atmospheric Watercolours-<br />
<br /></div>
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jean-Haines-Atmospheric-Watercolours-expression/dp/1844486745/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542645102&sr=8-3&keywords=Jean+Haines&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=cd945652c8e0d358bb9b22d5afb4705f&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1844486745&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=1844486745" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
2. Colour & Light in Watercolour<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jean-Haines-Colour-Light-Watercolour/dp/1782212612/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542645102&sr=8-5&keywords=Jean+Haines&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=af9ff5faffb1e4261c6102c5280b3e7f&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1782212612&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=1782212612" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
3. World of Watercolour<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jean-Haines-World-Watercolour/dp/1782210393/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542645102&sr=8-4&keywords=Jean+Haines&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=e1e2f2094705992831a142e25e9fe419&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1782210393&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=1782210393" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
4. Paint Yourself Calm<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This my least favorite of the bunch, as I feel it has less techniques in it, and focuses more on the concept of playing with watercolors for therapuetic reasons. While I definitely agree with that effect of watercolors, I buy art books for techniques and inspiration, which I found more of in the other 3 books. This is just my personal preference, if this concept speaks to you, you will enjoy this book.</div>
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Paint-Yourself-Calm-Mindfulness-Watercolour/dp/1782212825/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542645102&sr=8-6&keywords=Jean+Haines&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=c5e2f6fabfdf217660d3d4be1291f4cb&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1782212825&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=1782212825" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next up 2 books on color theory. Both excellent. If I had to pick one I'd pick Color Choices by Stephen Quiller, as I found it much easier to follow. Making Colour Sing is a wonderful book as well, but one that needs time and focus, which in my busy toddler controlled world, is not always possible.</div>
<br />
5. Color Choices- Making Color Sense out of Color Theory<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Color-Choices-Making-Sense-Theory/dp/0823006972/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542646268&sr=8-1&keywords=stephen+quiller+books&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=c5d247e6f122395612cd3b243819e13c&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0823006972&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=0823006972" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
6. Making Color Sing<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Making-Color-Sing-25th-Anniversary/dp/0823031152/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542646268&sr=8-5&keywords=stephen+quiller+books&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=4b37841daa998caec44b2883db1c5d62&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0823031152&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=0823031152" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next 2 books are my idea of eye candy. Flip through them and get that joy of seeing beautiful whimsical art. Follow the tutorials and try not to get too frustrated ;)</div>
<br />
7. Fabulous Figures<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1942021321/ref=as_li_ss_il?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d&ascsub&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=a7d5802562bea35436083b6c10eea96f&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1942021321&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=1942021321" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
8. The Art of Creative Watercolor<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Art-Creative-Watercolor-Inspiration-Imaginative-ebook/dp/B07BB71HV9/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&qid=1542647885&sr=8-1&keywords=danielle+donaldson+books&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=03b02bc9b13a7152df5136746f558f9f&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07BB71HV9&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=B07BB71HV9" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next up my wild card. For the edgy teen or person in your life, this artist's style is modern and graphic. A great pick for lovers of sketching and watercolors.</div>
<br />
9. Urban Watercolor Sketching<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Urban-Watercolor-Sketching-Painting-Storytelling/dp/0770435211/ref=as_li_ss_il?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=&linkCode=li3&tag=iritland-20&linkId=d0c88734795f5610eb4e8fa282e37283&language=en_US" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0770435211&Format=_SL250_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=iritland-20&language=en_US" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=iritland-20&language=en_US&l=li3&o=1&a=0770435211" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next is a book with a unique format. I recommend watching my YouTube video or follow the link (click the photo) and see for yourself. I hope she will come out with more of these!</div>
<br />
10. Watercolor With Me In The Forest-<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
11. Florales Watercolor-<br />
<br />

These are my two favorite stamps sets from the Dylusions range. <a href="https://amzn.to/2Oaot3Y" target="_blank">Branching out</a> on the left, and <a href="https://amzn.to/2NC3GFp" target="_blank">Around the Edge</a> on the right. Find them also on Blitsy <a href="http://shrsl.com/12lzv" target="_blank">HERE</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are<a href="http://shrsl.com/12m0r" target="_blank"> many stencils</a> in the <a href="https://amzn.to/2LKLl8z" target="_blank">Dylusions line</a>, my favorite is Chequered Dots, an older one that is not that widely available anymore. If you get your hands on it, it's a lovely one!</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love <a href="https://amzn.to/2NFknja" target="_blank">the paints and the spray inks</a>. The paint is fast drying and matte. Perfect for adding mist on top. The mists are as vibrant as can be (the last release shown here has softer colors, but most of the older sprays are extremely bright and intense). My favorite paint currently is <a href="http://shrsl.com/12m05" target="_blank">Periwinkle Blue</a>, and <a href="https://amzn.to/2mFe2J4" target="_blank">spray ink</a> in <a href="http://shrsl.com/12m09" target="_blank">Bubblegum Pink</a>.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

White Linen is a semi opaque white spray ink and it's fantastic. Find it on <a href="https://amzn.to/2mGVfgI" target="_blank">Amazon</a> or <a href="http://shrsl.com/12m0j" target="_blank">Blitsy</a>.<br />
<br />
That's it! I hope you found this useful, I'll be back soon with more videos and favorites!<br />

I wanted to share with you some of my favorite watercolors. Keep on Scrolling for the full list & links. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c6LsWaLgIxw/Wy_A8zfHzfI/AAAAAAAAk5A/YZ_nzB2H9vw5EN3yFjHN48qWpCtmBvpGwCLcBGAs/s1600/scrapwithme%2B%252820%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c6LsWaLgIxw/Wy_A8zfHzfI/AAAAAAAAk5A/YZ_nzB2H9vw5EN3yFjHN48qWpCtmBvpGwCLcBGAs/s640/scrapwithme%2B%252820%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a large collection and am always on the hunt for that perfect shade. I am not comparing brands here or reviewing sets, these are just some of the more unique shades of watercolor in my collection. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OTErRAi7Jq0/Wy_BdDT4nTI/AAAAAAAAk5I/CpgsqiueEyQ4lsic2G9Piw4XHZcl7STwwCLcBGAs/s1600/daniel-smith-aussie-red-gold-sennelier.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OTErRAi7Jq0/Wy_BdDT4nTI/AAAAAAAAk5I/CpgsqiueEyQ4lsic2G9Piw4XHZcl7STwwCLcBGAs/s640/daniel-smith-aussie-red-gold-sennelier.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I find that the great brands (Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Sennelier, Holbein to name a few) have a very comparable range of standard colors, but the ones I mention here are a little harder to find. Not every brand has every shade, obviously. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YYHLcx3qHlQ/Wy_BlY4yXxI/AAAAAAAAk5k/MZXOF1j0ZxYAeLO3S44CQAK5gm4iPoI_wCEwYBhgL/s1600/opera-shinhan-pass-holbein-pwc-bright-rose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YYHLcx3qHlQ/Wy_BlY4yXxI/AAAAAAAAk5k/MZXOF1j0ZxYAeLO3S44CQAK5gm4iPoI_wCEwYBhgL/s640/opera-shinhan-pass-holbein-pwc-bright-rose.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I find when it comes to the primary colors and the classic choices for a palette, the differences between this ultramarine blue or that are not that big, and it comes down to personal preferences. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--gmw3Gyp4TE/Wy_BkYFhkJI/AAAAAAAAk5g/d6aDFUzqP9AYzKy3v6DCNsG12j95PLGmgCEwYBhgL/s1600/opera-pink-daniel-smith-shinhan-pass-schmincke-sennerlier.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1192" data-original-width="1600" height="476" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/--gmw3Gyp4TE/Wy_BkYFhkJI/AAAAAAAAk5g/d6aDFUzqP9AYzKy3v6DCNsG12j95PLGmgCEwYBhgL/s640/opera-pink-daniel-smith-shinhan-pass-schmincke-sennerlier.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Personally, I love the tertiary colors the most. The violets, the orange yellows, the turquoises, teals and mints. While one can certainly mix similar shades using primary colors, I keep a range of my favorites in my palette. Some for conveniece, and some because they are rather impossible to mix (like the fluorescent colors). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are so many beautiful pigments and colors, why not use them? So these are MY picks, based on MY colour preferences. </div>

Poor poor neglected blog. If you're wondering where I am, I'm on YouTube mostly. Working on lots of different projects at the moment, so something's gotta give, and it's usually my blog... Do people still read blogs? I don't know. Anyway, make sure you follow me on YouTube, that's where it's all at these days. I have new videos every week, and there are many of them coming in April and May.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you're a mixed media fan, I'm posting many tutorials on Patreon, it's such great value, and the platform is very user friendly, especially on mobile devices (make sure you download the app!!). Anyway, less talking, more creating. Here's today's Journal With Me video. Enjoy!</div>

Mijello Mission Gold 36 Tubes Set<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hi! I filmed this much requested video, to hopefully help those of you who are not sure which set of watercolors to get. I am comparing the <a href="http://amzn.to/2qGVifs" target="_blank">White Nights 36 full pans set</a> (known also as St. Petersburg) to the <a href="http://amzn.to/2qHF6uJ" target="_blank">Mijello Mission Gold 36 tubes set</a>. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8IoGauPoik/WSGGdwkkHFI/AAAAAAAAbto/9uMzsMLcTnsUu7OMSZBTO93r9IZpisWHACLcB/s1600/2017-05-20%2B15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u8IoGauPoik/WSGGdwkkHFI/AAAAAAAAbto/9uMzsMLcTnsUu7OMSZBTO93r9IZpisWHACLcB/s640/2017-05-20%2B15.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bottom line (this is my opinion only), I'd get the White Nights set for several reasons discussed in the video. But both sets offer high quality and good value for money. Another option worth considering is the White Nights 24 set in the 36 box.</div>

Poor neglected blog... This is what happens when I have deadlines, and also pretty art supplies that call my name and tempt me to step away from the computer... The best way to know what I'm up to is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeZhhlEHIB4mdlDR6frg5zA">to follow my YouTube channel</a>, where I normally post process videos and tutorials at least twice a week. And lately there's a lot of art journaling on there!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Art journaling eye candy... </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J7TuvUnnSeE/WPdATj2_-aI/AAAAAAAAboc/EaWgniawhtMwo_1nqjFm504XTNO-ZDxGACLcB/s1600/48_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J7TuvUnnSeE/WPdATj2_-aI/AAAAAAAAboc/EaWgniawhtMwo_1nqjFm504XTNO-ZDxGACLcB/s640/48_edited-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
These colors make me so very happy...<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have lots of fun things coming, National Scrapbooking Day is just around the corner, so I will have extra projects for that day, on top of my usual videos and blog posts for my design teams. I'm also working on new classes, so lots to look forward to! </div>
Thanks for stopping by and stay tuned for fun things!Irit Landgrafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07766391979428584715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1295038391879710702.post-79774328217136816092017-03-26T06:08:00.003-07:002017-03-26T11:54:19.411-07:00Dr. Ph. Martin's Radiant Concentrated Water Color<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to share these new (to me) watercolors I just got. <a href="http://amzn.to/2n5exKi">Dr. Ph. Martin's Radiant Concentrated Water Color.</a> They come in 4 sets of 14, or open stock. I got Set A. They are so much fun, and the colors are INTENSE. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wBnUDu2cQA8/WNe61Zm0zLI/AAAAAAAAbmI/WfFrOdgZzbw0gmSdXYoalUgZy4nMo2OtQCLcB/s1600/65.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wBnUDu2cQA8/WNe61Zm0zLI/AAAAAAAAbmI/WfFrOdgZzbw0gmSdXYoalUgZy4nMo2OtQCLcB/s640/65.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are not lightfast, but as someone who mostly journals in her art journal, it's not an issue at all. These are insanely vibrant, but with a little experience, they can be diluted to lighter shades, or mixed to create new colors, bright and neutral. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are the colors in <a href="http://amzn.to/2mE2GYv">Set A</a>, and <b>there are also a brown and black in the set </b>that are not shown. I have to emphasize, the colors are not as they are in reality. The pinks are rather close, but even with some photoshop editing, I couldn't get the turquoise ones to show properly, so please take that under consideration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HTwVYEX7Dd4/WNe67Wa-eII/AAAAAAAAbmU/fIgG7AIg_Xgt8nkPdRVv4JnbdHO0DghoACLcB/s1600/68.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HTwVYEX7Dd4/WNe67Wa-eII/AAAAAAAAbmU/fIgG7AIg_Xgt8nkPdRVv4JnbdHO0DghoACLcB/s400/68.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's an art journal spread I started using these-<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MblV7y6V6fs/WNe65PUTLBI/AAAAAAAAbmQ/OuPa9biKACMITl6TY38eGXqn1c7yBQx8wCLcB/s1600/67.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MblV7y6V6fs/WNe65PUTLBI/AAAAAAAAbmQ/OuPa9biKACMITl6TY38eGXqn1c7yBQx8wCLcB/s640/67.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These are so easy to mix, here's a color wheel I created from just 3 colors-<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_T2OdsBjsxY/WNe64DGtnBI/AAAAAAAAbmM/QvTTFh2xgu86OGxyq4xgF1w-5dfCSYTEgCLcB/s1600/63.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_T2OdsBjsxY/WNe64DGtnBI/AAAAAAAAbmM/QvTTFh2xgu86OGxyq4xgF1w-5dfCSYTEgCLcB/s640/63.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I show you how these look and talk about the pros and cons in the video-<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've been art journaling a storm in my studio these past couple of weeks. I don't know if it's the supplies or me, or both of us, but I've been having so much fun! My head is buzzing with ideas for new classes, I wish I could paint all day long... So here's the latest spread I created in my wonderful Jane Davenport journal-</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cBs9R1cwA3Y/WNFAW_ntb3I/AAAAAAAAbkQ/g5jwZAZBlKsKIYaN40mFqg8ej8LUIGMWgCLcB/s1600/56.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cBs9R1cwA3Y/WNFAW_ntb3I/AAAAAAAAbkQ/g5jwZAZBlKsKIYaN40mFqg8ej8LUIGMWgCLcB/s640/56.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I managed to stop using my <a href="http://aurorasland.blogspot.co.at/2017/03/i-recently-decided-to-set-up-gouache.html">gouache palette</a> (been having so much fun with it!), pulled out my Derwent Inktense Blocks (<a href="http://amzn.to/2niGylc">click here for these on Amazon.com</a>) and Derwent Graphitint (love them! <a href="http://amzn.to/2mLTiNv">Here's the link</a>) and created this simple and fast art journal spread-</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bpO3CW6X5eM/WNFBK3KpTjI/AAAAAAAAbkY/yZlx0BSAV5okR-VZ1MSxPS5-Gy0rz5-VwCLcB/s1600/54.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bpO3CW6X5eM/WNFBK3KpTjI/AAAAAAAAbkY/yZlx0BSAV5okR-VZ1MSxPS5-Gy0rz5-VwCLcB/s640/54.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Make sure you follow me on YouTube, so you don't miss out of any process videos and tutorials! Here are a couple of new art journaling videos from my channel, this one will be up in a couple of days-</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XAlfGyLMBNU/WMvZOGkX7fI/AAAAAAAAbi4/QzmnmGWk5Q0lKtXdazS8KX6ajFLv_gMAQCLcB/s1600/shinhan8_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XAlfGyLMBNU/WMvZOGkX7fI/AAAAAAAAbi4/QzmnmGWk5Q0lKtXdazS8KX6ajFLv_gMAQCLcB/s640/shinhan8_edited-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/mmSt0JL94vo/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mmSt0JL94vo?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love bright colors, and wanted to have white also so I could mix my own pastel shades. I chose a mixture of Shinhan paints (for their vibrancy and great value), Winsor & Newton gouache (gorgeous vibrant pinks and purples) and a few opaque Shinhan watercolors (not shown in the photo. I added Lavender, Lilac and Jaune Brill #2). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Thanks for visiting! Irit Landgrafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07766391979428584715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1295038391879710702.post-80735088968772107392017-03-13T07:17:00.000-07:002017-03-16T11:41:27.429-07:00Custom Watercolor Palette<div style="text-align: justify;">
I recently got to spend some time with my watercolor swatches, and create a custom palette for a friend. She wanted one go-to artist grade palette, with bright colors and some neutrals. With those guidelines, I went to my paints, and came up with this palette.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>A word of caution-</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As someone who spends way too much time online searching for that perfect paint, that elusive brilliant color combination, and other people's choices of their favorite colors, <b>this is a question of taste and personal preferences</b>. So please, if you love browns, paint only landscapes, this is probably the wrong palette for you, not because you can't mix gorgeous natural looking colors and endless shades of brown from it, but because it would take you longer, and just won't make sense. What I'm trying to say, is that while I did take under account versatility as a major factor for choosing these particular shades, I also chose colors based on my personal preferences. I tend to like my watercolors bright, vivid, transparent, I'm obsessed with pinks and teals, and prefer my neutrals on the grey-blue (as opposed to brown) side. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, while I did my best to adjust the colors in the photos to be as true to the colors in real life, it's not 100% accurate, and screen differ from one another. Fluorescent colors, like Daniel Smith's Opera, just don't translate to photos the way they are in reality. Opera is much lighter and more fluorescent in reality than it appears in the photo. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Enough talking, here are the photos of the chosen 26, they fit snugly in a 24 metal half pan box (and one could add more pans between the rows).<br />
Continue reading for information about each of the colors I chose (with affiliate links at the bottom of the post).</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-22Y8rNgqu4E/WLq6Ncf0ARI/AAAAAAAAbiM/tbwaR49FsQ0O3oaHrA0c0oHwfVg42RG9ACLcB/s1600/custom%2Bpalette2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-22Y8rNgqu4E/WLq6Ncf0ARI/AAAAAAAAbiM/tbwaR49FsQ0O3oaHrA0c0oHwfVg42RG9ACLcB/s640/custom%2Bpalette2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Starting from the top photo, top row, from left to right (pigments in brackets)-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Schmincke Lemon Yellow (PY3)</b>- Semi-transparent. Standard color that can be found in any brand of artist grade watercolors. This is blue biased yellow. Use it with any green, turoquoise and yellow biased blues (like Phthalo blue) to mix bright vivid greens. When mixed with redish blues like ultramarine the result is more natural greens. Mix it with reds and pinks for natural looking oranges. I haven't found much differences from brand to brand. I currently use in my palette Sennelier's Lemon Yellow as I prefer a transparent color.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith New Gamboge (PY97, PY110)</b>- transparent, non granulating, low staining. Every versatile palette needs a red biased yellow (a warmer yellow), and the choice was made here based on my personal taste and preference. There are many lovely warm yellows, but Daniel Smiths' New Gamboge is such a gorgeous color I had to include it. I also like Sennelier's Indian Yellow (transparent made from PY154, PY153). If you like a more opaque yellow, The new Schmincke Turner's yellow is lovely (PY216), as is Daniel Smith's Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue (PY53, PY151, PY83).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith Quinacridone Gold (PY49)-</b> transparent, granulating, non staining. I love this earthy color. It's a transparent alternative to ochre yellow (although Daniel Smith and Schmincke have just come out with transparent yellow ochre). It's wonderful for mixing natural greens, and is just a gorgeous color on its own. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Qor Transparent Pyrrole Orange (PO71)</b>- This is more a convenience color, as orange can obviously be mixed using yellow and red/pink. However, this orange is beautiful, and nothing wrong with some convenience in life ;) I love using Qor paints with other brands, because the Qor ones push the other paints away, which creates lovely effects. Schmincke's translucent Orange is almost identical. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet (PR206)</b>- Transparent, non granulating, low staining. From the Daniel Smith website- This slightly sedimentary rich dark red-brown could lighten, brighten and eliminate mud browns in all your paintings. I chose it as an alternative to the classic burnt sienna. It creates beautiful neutrals when mixed with ultramarine blue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Shinhan Bright Rose (BR12)- </b>This is one of my current color
crushes. Because I made this palette from my stash, I had to substitute
some paints that I was running low on. I got this one to see if it would
resemble my <b>Holbein Bright Rose. </b>It's very very close. I still
like Holbein a little better. The pigments are acutally different.
Holbein's is made of BV11:1, AB83. Shinhan's is cheaper.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Qor Quinacridone Magenta (PR122)</b>-
transparent, staining and gorgeous. This is, in my opinion, a staple
color. Makes beautiful violets and purples when mixed with any blue and
lovely oranges.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b><b>Mijello Mission Gold Permanent Rose (PV19)- </b></b>A lovely pink. What can I say? I love pinks! This one is more reddish than Magenta.<br />
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Quinacridone Coral (PR209)</b>- Transparent and gorgeous. This is one of my favorite reds in my palette, and I prefer it to post box reds (just my personal preference). There are almost identical or similar versions of this color in most brands, but the names are different. Sennelier's Quin. Red is almost identical (but a touch less vivid).<br />
<br />
<b>Qor Pyrrole Red Light (PR255)-</b> a yellow biased red. Makes vivid oranges when mixed with warm yellows and muted purples when mixed with blue. Use it to neutralize teal and turquoise.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith Quinacridone Coral (PR209)-</b> transparent gorgeous color. It's in the palette because I love it. Check the pigments in each brand, because the names vary. Sennelier's version is called quinacridone red.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Opera (PR122)</b>- This fluorescent fugitive pink is hugely popular. I rarely use it in pure form, but it is amazing for mixing colors. It makes the most luminous corals, reds, violets and beautiful semi neutrals when mixed with greens. I have this color in several brands (Mission Gold Bright Opera and Holbein's Opera are similar to DS, Winsor & Newton's Opera Rose is a touch less bright but beautiful) and they are all quite similar. I've recently purchased some Shinhan Pass paints, which is supposed to be a hybrid gouache-watercolor paint (more on that in future posts), and their version of Opera is VERY intense when used in full strength. The Shinhan Pass paint comes in a 20ml tube, and costs a fraction of Daniel Smith's version. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Shinhan Pass Red Violet (PR81 BV11)</b>- Even though this paint is different than traditional watercolors (it's marketed as hybrid gouache watercolor paint, depending on how diluted it is), I had to include it. It's too fun. Brighter than any of my watercolors in similar shades, it is just gorgeous with a huge variety of shades and intensity. </div>
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Mayan Violet (PV58)</b>- Beautiful transparent, granulating, slightly muted violet. Convenience color (meaning it can be mixed using other colors), but oh so pretty.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith Quinacridone Purple (PV55)</b>- This one looks brighter in the photo than in real life. It's a lovely purple. Creates great neutrals with Lemon Yellow. The Schmincke version is almost identical.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Qor<span class="st"> Dioxazine Purple </span>(PV23)</b>- Another convenience color. A popular purple. It's on the blue side. Daniel Smith's version is called Carbazole Violet. Sennelier's version is almost identical. My personal favorite (which I didn't have a tube of, so couldn't include in this palette) is Old Holland Dioxazine Mauve, which is a touch less blue. But I love how Qor paints push aside other brands, so wanted to include a few in this palette.<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Daniel Smith Moonglow ( PG18 PB29 PR177 )</b>- Transparent, granulating, low staining. It's a mixture of 3 pigments, and is a really interesting and very popular color. From the Daniel Smith website- 'Water frees this amazing three-pigment blend to perform miracles. Watch
and wait as Anthraquinoid Red floats, Ultramarine Blue settles and
Viridian grays the resulting violet color. Selectively blot and lift a
surface wash to expose delicate blue-greens. A description of the
fascinating light and dark washes can never match a personal experience!'. Couldn't have said it better myself. Obviously if you have those three pigments in your palette you can mix your own version, but having this color in my palette is convenient and fun!<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Mijello Mission Gold Sepia (PBr7 PBk7)</b>- Even though I try to avoid using colors with black in them, this neutral is still lovely. A grayish brown. Sepia is a classes earth tone in palettes, but the color varies greatly from brand to brand. I'd consider replacing this with Schmincke's Neutral Tint (PR122 PB60 PBk7), which doesn't have brown in it, is less transparent than the MG sepia, but is a beautiful shade of gray (brown? purple? I can't exactly characterize it...).<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Schmincke Payne's Grey (PR101 PB29 PBk7)</b>- A popular color in palettes. One can easily mix it and get beautiful color without using black, but it is convenient to have it, and is also useful for mixing colors or toning down bright colors (although I find I mostly use complementary colors to do that these days over grey). I like the Schmincke version, Sennelier's and St. Petersburg White Nights are practically identical. Schmincke also has a blueish version that I considered adding to this palette, but because of having Indigo in the palette, I decided to go with this one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Schmincke Indigo (PB15:1 PB66)</b>- I love Schmincke's version of indigo above all the others I've tried. It doesn't have black in it, and is a deep gorgeous muted blue.<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Ken Bromley's French Ultramarine (PB29)</b>- French Ultramarine or Ultramarine Blue is probably a part of every single watercolor palette... A lovely red biased blue, it is transparent, non staining and granulating. Ken Bromley is an online art supplies store based in the UK, and this is their house brand of very affordable paints. This one is lovely. I also have a half pan of Sennelier's deep ultramarine that is also lovely, as well as the Qor version. With artist grade paints it's hard to go wrong with this one. My brightest version is actually White Nights, but I only find those in full pan size, so it doesn't fit my regular palette. If I could find it in a tube, I'd probably use that one.<br />
<br />
<b>Mijello Mission Gold Viridian (PG7)</b>- I don't buy a lot of greens, but it's nice to have a few in one's palette for convenience. Phthalo green is a good choice, a vivid blueish green. Mission Gold named this color Viridian, but the pigment is also known as phthalo green.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Cobalt Teal Blue (PG50)</b>- one of my favorite colors in my palette. If you love teal, this is a must have. Every brand has their own version of this color, using PG50 or other pigments in less expensive paints. I have yet to find one I don't like. I have this pigment in M. Graham's, Schmincke's, Qor's and Sennelier's versions, and they all differ slightly in shade and level of granulation, but all beautiful.<br />
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Phthalo Turquoise (PB15 PG36)</b>- staining, transparent and intense turquoise. This one is also a convenience color, but it's so gorgeous. I love having a deep turquoise on my palette. If you want a similar granulation color, try Daniel Smith's Ultramarine Turquoise.<br />
<br />
<b>Daniel Smith Phthalo Blue GS (PB15)</b>- From the Daniel Smith website-'For cool, clean staining shadows and reflected light on windows. Super
staining, super transparent Phthalo Blue is a popular pure chroma
organic pigment. Mix with Hansa Yellow for luminous greens.' This is a popular color in many palettes.<br />
<br />
<b>M. Graham Cobalt Blue (PB28)</b>- A beautiful blue, it's somewhere between ultramarine blue and phthalo blue on the color wheel. A good choice for a primary blue, the M. Graham version has lovely granulation. It's non staining so would work great for skies and lifting techniques. Love this one.<br />
<br />
<b>Mijello Mission Gold Sap Green (PY150 PG36)</b>- Another convenience color, it's a popular green to have. I like the mission gold version, as it's very bright and on the yellow side.<br />
<br />
It wasn't easy, and many good choices were left out of this palette... But I couldn't include all the colors... Sadly... I'm sure this palette will bring much joy to its recipient!<br />

As I'm putting the finishing touches on my new soon to be released class Watercolor Workbook, I find myself thinking about the why behind this class. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This will be my 7th class (not counting the <a href="http://learn.iritlandgraf.teachable.com/" target="_blank">free mini class</a> and the hundreds of video tutorials on YouTube), and it is nothing like the ones I've done before.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BZsiZo3omYw/WKReHytvioI/AAAAAAAAbcE/gMs4tQrcEBAaUG5vGa7cc4zwylxuRlvuwCLcB/s1600/14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BZsiZo3omYw/WKReHytvioI/AAAAAAAAbcE/gMs4tQrcEBAaUG5vGa7cc4zwylxuRlvuwCLcB/s640/14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, since I created all those other classes, there are some similarities. I create classes I would like to take myself. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like my classes to be technique based. Those techniques are like tools in my tool box, always available when I want to create something. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm a big fan of showing something from start to finish. All my classes until now have been based on showing the process of creating a scrapbook layout from start to finish. As someone who struggles with following through, I want to have something finished (or almost finished) to show for it. Especially when it comes to playing with watercolors. I have so many piles of papers of just paint blobs, from doing exercises or trying to paint something... Some are finished. Most are not. Some look like they could be something, many look like... well, paint blobs. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to come up with a project that will get people painting, and give them satisfying results. I wanted a fun, non threatening, non intimidating way of approaching watercolors, playing with them, and not be frustrated with disappointing results. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tdDJrBnJZhU/WKRf1YtR-GI/AAAAAAAAbcY/-kLzs5sOYXAJIvo2o0vLq5nFRQb7qEnqwCLcB/s1600/2017-02-02%2B09.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tdDJrBnJZhU/WKRf1YtR-GI/AAAAAAAAbcY/-kLzs5sOYXAJIvo2o0vLq5nFRQb7qEnqwCLcB/s640/2017-02-02%2B09.34.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I believe that in order to be good in anything, one must put in the time and effort. However, I know many people want to paint as their therapy, as a creative outlet, as a hobby. They either can't, or don't want to practice and practice, sketch, plan, and do all those things that are important for improving skills. They just want to paint when they have a bit time. And it was this place exactly that was lacking, in my opinion, and from my personal experience, and that's why I created this class.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, watercolors are so pretty and I want everyone to enjoy them! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here's some more chatting about it-</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm writing this post as I am editing and finalizing the lessons for my upcoming class 'Watercolor Workbook'. The class will go live this month, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to tell you a little bit about my infatuation, hmm, who am I kidding, full blown obsession with watercolors. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1qo1wCWC_p4/WJnc4SHxjaI/AAAAAAAAbY0/C7KZmNoo3McLUGrAqgFfjfgCEzLrExmDQCLcB/s1600/7_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1qo1wCWC_p4/WJnc4SHxjaI/AAAAAAAAbY0/C7KZmNoo3McLUGrAqgFfjfgCEzLrExmDQCLcB/s640/7_edited-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will start at the beginning.<br />
I have no official art degree or education. I am completely self taught. What I do have, is a lifelong fascination with drawing and painting. As a child I was always drawing, mostly faces and portraits. I don't know how good I was, but I know I kept at it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fqHfdOKwRhw/WJndKG6e2_I/AAAAAAAAbY4/a3Dz_0LdkLQ0N67N06DTpGEsZ6pOGJSbACLcB/s1600/31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fqHfdOKwRhw/WJndKG6e2_I/AAAAAAAAbY4/a3Dz_0LdkLQ0N67N06DTpGEsZ6pOGJSbACLcB/s640/31.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Until I went to university. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Medicine school, to be accurate. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you can imagine, I did not have a lot of free time as a student, and much much less as I started working and became a mother. But then we decided to move to Austria, and since my degree was not recognized here, nor did I speak any German, I was suddenly a stay at home mom to our barely 2 year old daughter, while learning German and doing what was needed, to be able to practice medicine in Austria. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That left me with a lot more free time than I was used to. That led me to YouTube, which led me to scrapbooking. It didn't take long for me to find my way to mixed media, and watercolors. I started scrapbooking in 2011, and during 2013 I started using mixed media heavily on my layouts ( I'd like to refer to scrapbooking as my gateway drug ;) ). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since then, my style has evolved, developed and changed significantly. I had all these amazing supplies, paints, inks, mists, crayons... And from all of these, watercolors were the ones calling me, tempting me with their wonderful unique qualities and beauty. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qc4pvgyS5Xg/WJndt3KNJII/AAAAAAAAbZA/mM8aQ4cxR5c5f_tV0oZfFDdwfzKPzlASACLcB/s1600/35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qc4pvgyS5Xg/WJndt3KNJII/AAAAAAAAbZA/mM8aQ4cxR5c5f_tV0oZfFDdwfzKPzlASACLcB/s640/35.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was using them on my scrapbook layouts more and more, but that wasn't enough. I really wanted to explore this glorious medium more. I started learning, taking online classes, painting more and more. I may have done some watercolor shopping as well.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UiCcl3xmrJc/WJneTjUOZ9I/AAAAAAAAbZM/Grt7zOpJC10HiW_0u5QPhy416lx25WQxgCLcB/s1600/samples2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="372" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UiCcl3xmrJc/WJneTjUOZ9I/AAAAAAAAbZM/Grt7zOpJC10HiW_0u5QPhy416lx25WQxgCLcB/s640/samples2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And here I am. Still learning, always painting. I want to share the joy of painting with watercolors, even if you don't know how to draw, even if you're intimidated. This class is all about having fun.<br />

<ul>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I feel that all three can be considered as a go to set that will serve one for many many years. I have to say that since I've first seen and purchased the Kuretake set, the price has dropped significantly. When I bought my set a few years ago I paid around 60$ for it. As of the the day this post is going live on, the set costs less than half on Amazon. For that reason, this set is very attractive, and would be a lovely present. However, I do think it has some, possibly important, disadvantages, and that's why I wanted to introduce the other sets here, because I think they offer more flexibility and convenience. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are the advantages and disadvantages I found in each set.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Kuretake Gansai Tambi 36 pans set-</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Advantages:</div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>Price. This set contains 36 high quality paints, for less than a dollar per pan. </li>
<li>The colors are bright and vivid.</li>
<li>Nice color selection (though lots of greens!) </li>
<li>The pans are quite large, their surface area is about double the traditional European watercolor pan, which is great for large brushes.</li>
<li>Pans are sold separately so one can replace colors once empty or switch colors in the palette.</li>
<li>It comes packaged in a pretty (although not very practical) box. </li>
<li>There are specialty paints included, a pearlescent paint, gold and bronze. This can be an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on one's preferences.</li>
</ul>
Disadvantages:<br />
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>This palette is large. Really big. It measures about 7"x11", so you need a lot of space to work with it. Also, it comes in a rather attractive canvas covered carton box, but there is no mixing space, meaning if you want to mix or water down your colors you need an extra palette, which will take up even more space. This was for me a noticeable disadvantage that led me to search other palettes.</li>
<li>Compared to the other two options mentioned, this one is the least readily available, at least for me, in Austria.</li>
<li>One is limited only to this brand if one wants additional paints. Other companies' pans will not fit this unique Japanese size pan.</li>
<li>The colors are mostly semi opaque, which is typical of Japanese watercolors. I write this as a disadvantage because I prefer my watercolors transparent.</li>
<li>There are 8 greens in this set, which is a little excessive compared to other similar sized sets. </li>
<li>I couldn't find information online on pigments, opacity, lightfastness, granulation etc. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>St. Petersburg White Nights 36 full pans set-</b></div>
<br />
Advantages: <br />
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li> This set comes in a plastic box, with lots of mixing areas.</li>
<li>The colors are bright and vivid.</li>
<li>Nice color selection </li>
<li>The pans are large, not as large as the Kuretake ones, but still great size, standard full pans.</li>
<li>Colors can be purchased individually for a very attractive price (around 2$, cheaper than the other two brands mentioned here)</li>
<li>Because this is a standard pan size, one can replace the pans with pans from other brands. It fits both full and half pans, so one has lots of flexibility here.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Disadvatages:</div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;">
<li>This set is smaller than the Kuretake, but still quite large at about 5.5"x11".</li>
<li>Some colors are not lightfast (which means they will fade with the years), but I have found that to be true for many of the über bright colors in all brands. This doesn't bother me, but might be important to you.</li>
<li>I wish they had a lighter pink.... But I'm a little obsessed with that color... </li>
<li>I have found these only available in full pans. At their incredible low price it's not an issue, only if one prefers half pans for their compact size. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to admit I can't find many disadvantages with these. I love them, I think they are an amazing value for money, and I would recommend them to anyone at any level who wants a wonderful set of watercolors. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I actually think the best option is to buy <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/st-petersburg-white-nights-watercolour-24-pan-set-new-design/?___SID=U&___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=fbd7939d674997cdb4692d34de8633c4" target="_blank">the White Nights 24 set that comes in the 36 pans box</a>, and add 12 pans or 24 half pans of your choice to make this the perfect set for you.</div>
<br />
<b>Winsor & Newton Cotman 45 half pans set-</b><br />
<br />
Advantages:<br />
<ul>
<li>This set is the most compact of the three, as it contains half pans.</li>
<li>The palette is made out of plastic and has lots of mixing areas. The box seems to be a smaller version of the White Nights box.</li>
<li>There are 45 half pans in this set, 40 colors, plus 5 extras of certain colors (mine has 2 each of alizarin crimson hue, ultramarine, ivory black, white and yellow ochre.)</li>
<li>This set contains all the colors in the Cotman range, and its a great selection of watercolors. <b>Probably the best in this comparison. </b></li>
<li>One can replace each half pan with a half pan from other brands.</li>
<li>The Cotman range, which is the student grade range from Winsor & Newton, comes also in tubes, which makes it very economical in the long run. (once a pan is empty, one can buy the tube of that exact paint, which will last a long time).</li>
<li>Winsor & Newton are probably the most widely available paints from the three brands reviewed here. </li>
</ul>
Disadvantages:<br />
<ul>
<li>These are student grade paints. And indeed when used, many colors are not as vibrant as the other two sets (there are some wonderful colors here though, like Mauve and Turquoise that are intense and beautiful). </li>
<li>These have the smallest pans, so can be less convenient when using a large brush.</li>
<li>Out of the three sets, these are the driest. They rewet nicely, but needs a little more work than the other two, which are creamier.</li>
</ul>
I will edit this post in the future if I find any new information or change my mind ;)<br />

Welcome to the first installment of what I hope will become an informative series. I chose to start with one of those basic, sometimes complicated and maybe boring subject- a little color theory and color mixing! I created this color wheel using a simple formula (who said math wouldn't be useful in life?!?!). The outer circle shows primary colors and how they mix to create the brightest colors. As we go into the circle the colors become muddier. How? Color theory magic. Grab your paints and give it a go. But watch the video below first!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U7ZvQ97B6Zo/WCWq2ZvBllI/AAAAAAAAbJw/rK56SFVlPYYZEtShTW6BNvCW27-a7w-wgCLcB/s1600/color%2Bmixing%2Bexcercise_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U7ZvQ97B6Zo/WCWq2ZvBllI/AAAAAAAAbJw/rK56SFVlPYYZEtShTW6BNvCW27-a7w-wgCLcB/s640/color%2Bmixing%2Bexcercise_edited-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am using my <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/st-petersburg-white-nights-watercolour-sets?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=fbd7939d674997cdb4692d34de8633c4" target="_blank">St. Petersburg White Nights paints</a>, which I love, for this demonstration.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L9LjIrShY6E/WCWq2Pjf7SI/AAAAAAAAbJs/UID_10PsruI9SimbVLmN9pgNcSEumtZ3gCLcB/s1600/color%2Bmixing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L9LjIrShY6E/WCWq2Pjf7SI/AAAAAAAAbJs/UID_10PsruI9SimbVLmN9pgNcSEumtZ3gCLcB/s640/color%2Bmixing.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I explain everything I'm doing and why in the video, so please check that out for more information. There is also some more written information in this post. Here's the video-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0Og8G5Ixd9A/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0Og8G5Ixd9A?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And here's another mixing chart I created-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XEeOjR_Ma3Q/WCW1rO00frI/AAAAAAAAbKA/DKJqoBCV77U68nf78T8MO9j2q3sd3uEIQCLcB/s1600/color%2Bmixing-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="522" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XEeOjR_Ma3Q/WCW1rO00frI/AAAAAAAAbKA/DKJqoBCV77U68nf78T8MO9j2q3sd3uEIQCLcB/s640/color%2Bmixing-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is quite obvious that the theory actually works! Amazing, I know. The brightest greens are created by using phthalo blue (yellow biased) with lemon yellow (blue biased). For a more muted green, change up one of those (like phthalo blue with hansa yellow or ultramrine with lemon yellow). And for an even muddier green, choose the two primaries that are red-biased- ultramarine and hansa yellow. And the same goes for the oranges and purples. Bright oranges- hansa yellow (red biased) with cadmium red light (yellow biased). Want a more muted orange? Change of of those to their blue biased version. And for a muddy orange, pick 2 primaries with blue bias, like lemon yellow and carmine/quin.rose. And the same for purple.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you probably already know, there are 3 primary colors, yellow, red/magenta and blue. And from those one can mix pretty much every other color. Thing is, even the primary colors are not pure, and contain a very small amount of another primary. That is why most basic sets of watercolors come with 2 of each primary. A basic set will usually have 2 yellows,2 reds and 2 blues.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are some examples of common primaries, but be mindful that these vary from brand to brand. Some companies carry some colors and some others. Some are very similar. There are other qualities that are important besides the color itself, such as opacity, granulation and lightfastness. But today we're just talking about mixing colors using primary colors. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So back to those 6/7 colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are <a href="http://www.dummies.com/art-center/performing-arts/art-painting/watercolor-painting-for-dummies-cheat-sheet/" target="_blank">a couple of very useful links</a> I have used before in an older watercolor post, <a href="http://www.watercolorpaintingandprojects.com/basics/color-primaries.html" target="_blank">both have great information about primary colors </a>and choosing them for your palette.</div>
Here's a quote from that site, dummies.com-<br />
<br />
<br />
<div itemprop="articleBody" style="text-align: justify;">
''Each one of the primary colors — red,
yellow, and blue — is biased, meaning that it leans toward one of the
other two primary colors. When mixing watercolor paints to get a
secondary color — orange, green, or purple — use two primaries biased
toward each other. Otherwise, you get a gray, muddy color. <br />
For example, to get purple, be sure to mix a blue biased toward red
such as ultramarine blue and a red biased toward blue such as alizarin
crimson. When mixing colors, refer to the following list:<br />
<ul class="level-one">
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Reds with a blue bias:</b> alizarin crimson, carmine, crimson lake, magenta, opera, rhodamine, rose madder, scarlet lake</div>
</li>
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Reds with a yellow bias:</b> cadmium red,
chlorinated para red, chrome orange, English red oxide, fluorescent red,
Indian red, light red, permanent red, perylene red, phioxine red, red
lake, red lead, sandorin scarlet, Venetian red, vermillion, Winsor red</div>
</li>
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Yellows with a blue bias:</b> aureolin,
azo, cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium yellow pale, Flanders yellow, lemon
yellow, permanent yellow light, primary yellow, Winsor yellow, yellow
light</div>
</li>
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Yellows with a red bias:</b> aurora
yellow, brilliant yellow, cadmium yellow medium and deep, chrome,
gallstone, golden yellow, Indian yellow, Mars yellow, Naples yellow,
permanent yellow medium and deep, raw sienna, Sahara, yellow lake,
yellow ochre</div>
</li>
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Blues with a red bias:</b> brilliant, cobalt, cyanine, indigo, mountain blue, ultramarine blue, verditer blue, Victoria blue</div>
</li>
<li><div class="first-para">
<b>Blues with a yellow bias:</b> Antwerp,
cerulean, compose, intense blue, manganese, monestial blue, Paris blue,
peacock blue, phthalocyanine blue, Prussian, Rembrandt, speedball,
touareg, turquoise, Winsor blue''</div>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Note**** Many recommend the shade Aureolin for a primary yellow, but it
has been found to fade to brown or grey, so consider avoiding it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Hi there! I've had this <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/colour/acrylic/acrylic-paint/brand/golden/sets-+-packs/set?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=fbd7939d674997cdb4692d34de8633c4" target="_blank">gorgeous set of Golden paints</a> land on my craft desk yesterday, and I had to play and see how the colors look and behave!<a href="https://blitsy.com/search?query=golden%20high%20flow"> I got mine from Blitsy</a>, where I often find good deals on art supplies (their brushes section is also great).<br />
<a href="http://amzn.to/2nex4Ir">**Here's the link for these on Amazon.com**</a><br />
Beware that they work with different suppliers, and I have had 2 incidences already that items I ordered turned out to be not available. I was promptly refunded, but with shipping costs, sometimes even if one item is not available, it would be nice to have the option to cancel the order (though I haven't tried contacting them with this issue, so there might still be that option). OK, back to the paints. Here's what I created-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VNCkMK5adNU/WBw7ctqFrGI/AAAAAAAAbEg/5QU40z1QuYMG0FTbp403Je4PBpVp4RmtACLcB/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VNCkMK5adNU/WBw7ctqFrGI/AAAAAAAAbEg/5QU40z1QuYMG0FTbp403Je4PBpVp4RmtACLcB/s640/4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started with just spreading color after I sprayed some water on my gessoed surface. Since I wanted to move the paint with my fingers, I used <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/winsor-newton-artguard-barrier-cream-250ml?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=fbd7939d674997cdb4692d34de8633c4" target="_blank">a barrier cream from Winsor & Newton called Artguard</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xrwGxdxyMDk/WBw7DupcUWI/AAAAAAAAbEU/kJqUA5DL65YrMXXFTxaATw-ELeBPt3rSwCLcB/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xrwGxdxyMDk/WBw7DupcUWI/AAAAAAAAbEU/kJqUA5DL65YrMXXFTxaATw-ELeBPt3rSwCLcB/s640/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The art journal I'm using is one I got at my local art supplies store. It has a really porous paper and has to be primed with gesso. I picked it up because of the binding, the signatures are stitched, and it lies down flat nicely.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IyqYR28Y65s/WBw7aR-pPbI/AAAAAAAAbEc/jFzG7V9D5wMUitotz5b-1UAEDQCmrhBQgCLcB/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IyqYR28Y65s/WBw7aR-pPbI/AAAAAAAAbEc/jFzG7V9D5wMUitotz5b-1UAEDQCmrhBQgCLcB/s640/2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After my first layers were dry I added more paint with a brush. I use <a href="https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B005HDO2XQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">cheap brushes</a> for my acrylic paints (because I can't be bothered to properly clean them...). </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Agqlt-P3ElE/WBw7RuIV0JI/AAAAAAAAbEY/Lp6DX2wDQAcAR8vyF9xk5Cg6mPY75LgxwCLcB/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Agqlt-P3ElE/WBw7RuIV0JI/AAAAAAAAbEY/Lp6DX2wDQAcAR8vyF9xk5Cg6mPY75LgxwCLcB/s640/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Final touches were added with a white Uni Ball Signo broad pen, and this <a href="https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B006CQT87W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">platinum Carbon pen</a>, which I'm in love with! </div>
Here's the video-<br />

I have something a little different for you today, which I'm hoping will eventually become as common as my scrappy adventures, because I have to admit- I am obsessed with watercolors. This medium is the most beautiful, fun, unexpected and just glorious. I can't get enough of it.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided to take Mandy van Goeije's challenge and create something using just 3 colors from the <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/colour/watercolour/watercolour-paint/brand/golden/sets-+-packs/set?___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=fbd7939d674997cdb4692d34de8633c4">Qor high chroma set- </a>(<a href="http://amzn.to/2myXlxu" target="_blank">Link to this set on Amazon.com</a>) Quinacridone Magenta, Transparent Pyrrole Orange and Cobalt Teal. These are favorites anyway, so I thought this would be a lovely challenge to take!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V98un6MRKnk/WBnK9hcenvI/AAAAAAAAbD4/u1V3tIWsqu8Qcv5bMm2Rtc5GRPTuvjnMACLcB/s1600/qor%2Bchallenge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V98un6MRKnk/WBnK9hcenvI/AAAAAAAAbD4/u1V3tIWsqu8Qcv5bMm2Rtc5GRPTuvjnMACLcB/s640/qor%2Bchallenge.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the color chart I created with the colors of this challenge. You can see all the lovely shades one can mix from these 3. And because they are so lovely and bright, it's really hard to get a muddy color. The top 3 rows are mixtures of 2 colors. The fourth row shows mixtures of all three with lots of water. The fifth and sixth rows show mixtures of the colors in their stronger saturation.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XtBFH42W3SE/WBnKfQS-zkI/AAAAAAAAbDg/dIrqcGH_PP4KVVoWyuQuwsOQJArZ4eDqgCLcB/s1600/2016-11-02%2B11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="632" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XtBFH42W3SE/WBnKfQS-zkI/AAAAAAAAbDg/dIrqcGH_PP4KVVoWyuQuwsOQJArZ4eDqgCLcB/s640/2016-11-02%2B11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I used a <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/princeton-synthetic-sable-1-2-inch-angle-wash-4050">1/2" angular shader brush by Princeton</a> and a <a href="https://www.jacksonsart.com/princeton-neptune-faux-squirrel-size-8-round-4750">Princeton Neptune #8 round</a>. I do a lot of painting and sketching in watercolor <a href="https://www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-ken-bromley-practice-paper-pack-50-sheets.htm">on this paper from Ken Bromley in the UK</a>. After I finished painting I added details with a pencil and a white Uni Ball Signo Broad pen.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
